Dr. Paul Kulpan at Alternative HealthCare of Parker
I’m a Doctor of Chiropractic and Functional Medicine Practitioner with over 35 years of experience in Parker, Colorado. I specialize in spinal care, auto accident injury treatment and nutritional counseling. I believe that through a combination of chiropractic care and a healthy, nutritional Functional Medicine approach, patients can take charge of their health and lead a full, beneficial life.
Raised in a central New Jersey blue collar suburb, I was the middle child, with an older sister and two younger brothers. We made regular trips to New York City where there was no shortage of people. Same with our summer trips to the Jersey Shore. Out of our kitchen window I could see the smokestacks of a major pharmaceutical company.
Finding My Calling
After graduating high school I decided to study accounting and commuted to Montclair State University. While commuting to school one day I was involved in a very serious automobile accident and my life changed. Doctors prescribed me so many pain pills, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories that not only weren’t helping me physically, I also wasn’t able to focus in class. There had to be another answer. I found Dr. Jay, a Chiropractor who saved my life in more ways than one. He made such an impression on me that I felt this was my life’s true calling. I packed up my car, left the congestion and headed for the Midwest and Logan Chiropractic College.
News from Back Home
While studying at Logan, there was lots of news from home but not all of it was good. My sister married her high school sweetheart and they had two small children. It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with leukemia and died shortly after. But not before we saw a strong, athletic and healthy young man succumb to the horrors of his disease. Sadly, what the medical field had available in terms of treatment, chemo and radiation, only made him feel sicker and contributed to his passing. Several of my friends back home also unexpectedly passed away, either from cancers or car accidents. All of this had the combined effect on me that after getting my Doctor of Chiropractic degree I needed to head west for the healthier lifestyle that I was looking for.
I found myself in Northern California opening my first practice in Pleasanton. My specialty was treatment for automobile injuries, and I continued to further my education in that field for 10 years with the prestigious Spine Research Institute of San Diego, becoming an Advanced Graduate. Nutrition was an integral part of our education in Chiropractic college. I not only saw its excellent results in the treatment of chiropractic patients, but realized the significance of nutrition in helping patients with chronic diseases. During this time, I also lost my father to cancer. After nine years in California I was fortunate; my clinic flourished, but somehow it didn’t feel much different than New Jersey. My days were busy and I never felt that stress-free lifestyle I was searching for. I needed a change and Colorado was calling.
From California to Colorado
As it happened, my roommate in Chiropractic college was selling his practice in Parker, Colorado, and so was the beginning of Alternative Healthcare of Parker in 1993. At the time Parker was a small town; there were two traffic lights and the population was a sixth of what it is now. My new clinic came with 12 existing patients and a cat that stopped by now and again. I biked to work, got two huskies for companions (a lifelong addiction) and got to work.
Finding My New Passion
While developing my new chiropractic practice I always made time to study my new passion, functional medicine. Drugs for health never made any sense, for chiropractic care or living a healthy life. I found good nutrition and positive lifestyle changes always lead to excellent results. Parker began to grow quickly and so did my practice. During this time I also lost my mother to cancer, which further instilled in me the desire to pursue my studies in functional medicine. I am convinced that by making healthy nutritional and lifestyle choices this can lead to a disease-free, productive and full life.
Health is Wealth
Today, Alternative Healthcare of Parker celebrates its 25th anniversary in this beautiful state, and I am happy to still be able to provide a full spectrum of wholistic care for our community. I am grateful for every single person who takes the time to come in and find out more about what I do and, more importantly, wants to be an active participant in becoming a healthier you.
